If you are losing sleep over the fact that you’re contemplating plastic surgery at 27, or if you are freaked out by the latest episode of Botched, there are a few things you should know. In a recent article by Betches, Dr. Gary Linkov of City Facial Plastics in New York City provides insight into preventative facial plastic surgery, including non-surgical and surgical facial procedures. You’ll learn why stigmas are out, and plastic surgery is very much in.

There is no shame in embracing the chance to change something on your body that you feel insecure about. Plastic surgery is not just something that women do in dark rooms once they turn 40. However, people need to be smart. It is important to have all the information before going under the knife or the needle. It is also important to choose the right plastic surgeon.

When asked about which facial procedures are the most popular, Dr. Gary Linkov says that Botox, fillers and chemical peels lead the pack in non-surgical facial rejuvenation services. As for surgical procedures, nose reshaping, facelifts and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) are often requested, while lip lifts continue to gain popularity. Regarding line and wrinkle prevention, Dr. Linkov notes that the only truly preventative strategy is Botox (wrinkle “gyms” are a no-go), and this explains why individuals in their 20s and early 30s are requesting it.

Too Much of a Good Thing?

We have all seen the frightening and rather frozen images on television and social media. Unfortunately, an overdone face is proof that sometimes, there can be too much of a good thing. Dr. Linkov says that with Botox, you’ve gone too far if you have lost the ability to show emotions through your natural facial expressions and have difficulty animating your face. When it comes to facial fillers, you’ll want to avoid anything that causes your features to look disproportionate to the rest of your face. For example, an anterior projected lip is obviously unnatural in appearance, unless you want to maintain the infamous selfie pout or duck face. The bottom line is—plastic surgery, whether non-surgical or surgical, is supposed to enhance what is already there.

Consider yourself warned. Too much filler is a common problem, and Dr. Linkov performs corrections on countless patients that have had a little too much plumping. In these instances, he usually dissolves the filler and starts over. On the other hand, a botched rhinoplasty requires a more invasive correction.

Treatment, Technique and Timing Matter.

Whether you’re hoping to get a leg up on early lines and wrinkles, or you’re wondering if it is time for a surgical facelift, treatment, technique and timing matter. Dr. Linkov explains that a surgeon should work with a patient to determine the safest and best treatment and technique. Though he suggests getting a facelift once the jowls begin to show “shivers” and some heaviness forms in the neck area, this could happen at different times for different people. The key is performing the facelift while underlying muscles still have some strength and integrity.

There is no question that facial rejuvenation procedures and plastic surgery can be pricey. When it comes to your face, however, there is simply no benefit in trying to cut costs. Dr. Linkov strongly recommends choosing a doctor based on their experience and commitment to safety, as every procedure has side effects.
